Her child did so well in school that he topped his level, and Waty, a single mum, carried a desire in her heart to reward her son with a special outing. Her prayer was answered on Saturday, 30 March 2013, when Waty and her son participated in a free excursion to S.E.A. Aquarium, the latest attraction at Resorts World Sentosa.
The excursion is part of a support group programme for single mothers by Care Corner Family Service Centre (Queenstown) and organised jointly with New Creation Church’s Outreach Ministry. The support group aims to provide a platform for single mothers to come together to develop their own support networks and be empowered in their role as the main caregiver of their families.
In addition to a tour of the oceanarium, a lunch picnic, polaroid taking sessions and icebreaker games were thoughtfully weaved into the day’s programme so the group of 14 mothers and 22 children could have ample opportunities to bond and spend quality time together.
“I can’t afford an outing like this for my son due to financial constraints, and I’m so grateful and happy that we could join in,” Waty said. For Waty, and other single mothers like her, the excursion also offered a much welcome respite from the daily grind.
“They shared that even if they could afford the entrance fees, meeting other more pressing needs such as daily necessities for their families would take precedence over expenses for family activities,” said Cheah Tse Boon, an executive with Outreach Ministry. “We’re happy that we made their day special. I also found out that one family was so touched by the love of God that they’ve started to attend our church to receive from Him!”
