On 17 August 2013, our single working adults, aged 29 and below, from The Zone (Youth) Ministry participated in Gan Eng Seng School’s Sow A Seed community involvement programme for students under its financial assistance scheme. Their mission for the day was to accompany 58 of these Secondary One to Three students to the S.E.A. Aquarium at Sentosa.
Presenting our enthusiastic volunteers!
By 8am in the morning, our enthusiastic volunteers were up and ready to welcome the arrival of their young buddies. Some appeared nervous at the beginning, unsure of how it would be like to interact with the teens. However, their apprehension soon faded away as they found out that a smile was all they needed to break the ice.
Our volunteers became instant friends with the secondary school students.
As a teacher herself, Priscilla Yu, always felt the need to correct her students. However, on this particular day, she felt prompted to step out of her role as an educator and laugh along with the teenagers. This simple act of obedience to the Lord gave Priscilla a fresh perspective for her teaching career and she learnt to enjoy the youths again.
A big group photo!
At the end of the event, the volunteers sat down together to pen down their reflections on the day’s programme. Though exhausted, many were amazed at how easy it was to sow seeds of kindness into the lives of these young ones. As summed up by Zhang Shini, 30, accountant, all that was required to win the hearts of the teens was a listening ear. “They can sense that we are sincere in wanting to know them better when we listen and hear what they say. In all, it’s great to serve the Lord out of the abundance of His love for these youths!”
