On 7 February 2015, a team of 79 volunteers from GenRev (our youth group for single working adults) and three church staff members celebrated a meaningful, grace-filled Chinese New Year with the elderly residents of Ling Kwang Home through a special festive programme.
The team sang, led praise and worship and played games with 120 residents of the Christian nursing home, as well as enjoyed Lo Hei (a festive salad) and a buffet meal with them. In addition to receiving goodie bags and photo mementos, the elderly residents were also blessed by the sharing of the gospel.
Our staff and volunteers also visited 200 bedridden residents in their wards and prayed with them. These residents were similarly treated to song performances and given polaroid photos as mementos.
Madam Vivien Khoo, a 71-year-old resident, was deeply touched by the volunteers who visited her room. “I felt my spirit being uplifted through the beautiful songs they sang and the word of restoration they shared. The strong presence of the Lord in the room was unlike the devotion services that we have in the home. It revived the passion for the Lord in my heart, and rekindled the fire and fervour I had for Him many years back. Thank you for blessing me with your presence,” she shared.
For our volunteer Jesline, seeing the smiles on the faces of the bedridden residents was priceless. “We met a lady who used to attend our church when she was younger and able-bodied. She asked about the church, and it was heartening that we were able to bring some updates to her even though she was not able to attend the services.”
